Submission Guidelines
Slayage is an open-access, anonymized peer-reviewed digital journal dedicated to the scholarly study of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its expansive cultural afterlives. We invite submissions that engage critically, creatively, and rigorously with texts that belong to—or orbit within—the Buffyverse “fuzzy set.”
Scope and Areas of Interest
We accept:
- Essay proposals, consisting of a title and a full paragraph description
- Completed essays of approximately 4,500–10,000 words
- Book reviews (see Slayage Book Reviewers’ Instructions)
Accepted essays may be lengthened during revision in consultation with the editors.
All submissions should demonstrate strong engagement with relevant existing scholarship, including—but not limited to—work commonly grouped under Whedon Studies. See this website’s link to the Whedonology bibliography and the Oxford UP annotated bibliography on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Peer Review Process
Submissions deemed appropriate for review are evaluated through anonymized peer review by a minimum of two editorial board members or external reviewers selected by the editors. Final publication decisions are made by the editors in consultation with reviewers.
Slayage will not consider submissions that have already been published elsewhere or which have been submitted to multiple academic journals.
Submission Instructions
- Include your name and email address at the top of the manuscript. (Editors will remove identifying information before peer review.)
- Undergraduate submissions should be sent to Watcher Junior.
- Submissions should be sent electronically as an email attachment in Word (.doc/.docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf).
